The Call Of The
Weird
by Louis Theroux |
 |
For ten years Louis Theroux
has been making programmes about characters on the fringes of US society. He
revisits America and the people who have fascinated him to try to discover what
motivates them, why they believe the things they believe, and to find out what
has happened to them. |
| ... a
gripping work of humorous travelogue ... |
A
Short History of Nearly Everything
by Bill
Bryson |
 |
Bryson describes himself as a reluctant
traveller: but even when he stays safely in his own study at home, he can't
contain his curiosity about the world around him. This is his quest to find out
everything that happened from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization - how we
got from there, being nothing at all, to here, being us. |
| ...The
ultimate eye-opening journey through time and space, revealing the world in a
way most of us have never seen it before... |
| Neither
Here Nor There: Travels in Europe
by Bill
Bryson |
 |
Bryson brings his unique brand
of humour to bear on Europe as he shoulders his backpack, keeps a tight hold on
his wallet, and journeys from Hammerfest, the northernmost town on the
continent, to Istanbul on the cusp of Asia. Fluent in, oh, at least one
language, he retraces his travels as a student 20 years before. |
| ...Bryson takes in
the sights, dissects the culture and illuminates each place and person with his
hilariously caustic observations. He even goes to
Liechtenstein... |

| Rough Guide - series of travel
guides |
 |
| Leading challenger to Lonely Planet in the budget market. It is
the best written of the guidebook series - some of its authors are novelists
and writers of travel literature. The elegant style of the books is often very
successful at conveying the essence of a place and its culture in an
unpretentious way. |
| Dorling Kindersley travel
guides |

 |
These are high-quality books
providing a detailed introduction to many of the world's top destinations.
Packed with excellent photographs, graphics, plans and 3D maps, they give the
traveller a real flavour of a place and what it has to offer. They are less
well endowed with more practical information, such as accommodation in the
larger countries; they cater more to the upper end of the market than to
backpackers whp need to count the pennies. |
